With Roger Taylor

Owning a reactive dog is incredibly challenging. No one wants to be the owner whose dog is lunging, barking, spinning, or even biting. I understand completely—I’ve been there. With so much conflicting advice available, it’s difficult to know where to turn.

For nearly 10 years, I’ve worked with reactive dogs and their stressed owners. I’m here to tell you that, with the right training and management, reactive behaviour can be overcome, giving you the happy, carefree companion you’ve always wanted.

What is Reactive Dog Training?

Reactive dog training focuses on understanding and addressing the underlying causes of your dog’s reactions. It’s about building their confidence, reducing their anxiety, and teaching them alternative behaviours to barking, lunging, and biting.

How Positive Training Helps

At Taylored Training & Behaviour, we use only positive, force-free training methods. This means no prong collars, e-collars, or outdated dominance theory. In fact, many of these tools and techniques can make reactivity worse.

  • Building Trust and Confidence: Positive reinforcement strengthens the bond between you and your dog, creating a safe learning environment.
  • Addressing Root Causes: We focus on understanding your dog’s triggers and emotions, not just suppressing the symptoms.
  • Teaching Alternative Behaviours: We teach your dog how to cope with their triggers and make better choices, leading to lasting change.

Our 8-year-old labrador/cocker spaniel is very cute-looking, which means everyone wants to stop and fuss her. Little did we know this was making her anxious. She developed a noise phobia and started to become reactive when touched. Roger’s reward-based training methods have given Bella her confidence back – she is now a total cuddle monster!

To anyone who feels that their dog is the worst in the world and can’t be changed without punishment, pain or force: please contact Roger. Our 2-year-old doberman is the sweetest boy away from home, but his aggression (or what we thought was aggression) towards house guests was on another level. Roger was very patient with us and took everything in his stride. Benson now calmly goes to his mat when the window cleaner or delivery men call and stays there until he’s told to leave.

We contacted Roger after our boxer became dog reactive and a nightmare to take out. From the first phone call with Roger, he was so positive and helpful. He has so much knowledge and taught us things we had no idea about. It was no quick or easy fix, but in 8 weeks we went from considering rehoming her to being able to enjoy our dog again.

To say that Roger has totally transformed our lives with our pets only scratches the surface. My husband and I adopted two street dog puppies – after a few weeks their play started to turn aggressive. Our only option was to get rid of one of the dogs… then a friend recommended Roger. With his constant support, the 8 weeks have totally transformed our dogs. They’re still young but can now interact together and with us in a positive way that helps them get what they need.
